Do I Need a Hallmark? Checker

Answer six questions about what you sell and get a plain-language printable: what BIS hallmarking requires of you — and what it doesn't.

Hallmarking answers mostly arrive as WhatsApp forwards. One jeweller says silver must carry a BIS mark, another says your turnover is too small for any of it to apply — and whoever was wrong is not the one whose listing gets pulled. This checker will ask six questions about what you actually sell, then give back a plain answer you can print.

What it will do

  • Ask six questions — metal, purity, weight, where you sell — and nothing more
  • Say plainly whether BIS registration and hallmarking apply to you, or do not
  • Separate what the law asks of you from what a marketplace asks on top of it
  • List the exemptions that exist, and where to read the current notified list
  • Print a one-page answer to show a supplier, a buyer or an account reviewer

Who reaches for it: Sellers moving gold, silver or plated stock without an older jeweller to ask — new shops, karigars going direct, and imitation brands mistaken for gold.

Do I need BIS registration to sell gold jewellery online?

Registration follows the seller, not only the maker. If you sell gold jewellery to customers, the outlet selling it is what BIS registers, and buying already-hallmarked stock from a wholesaler does not pass their registration to you. Apply on the BIS portal and read the current fee and validity there — both have changed since 2021.

Does gold-plated or imitation jewellery need a hallmark?

No. A hallmark certifies the purity of precious metal, and plated brass or alloy has no purity to certify — no BIS mark and no HUID exists for it. Stamping or writing 916 on such stock is a false claim, and marketplaces act on it. Describe it as what it is: brass base, gold plating, with micron thickness if your supplier states it.

How much does it cost to get jewellery hallmarked?

BIS fixes a per-article charge — around ₹45 for a gold piece, lower for silver — with a minimum per consignment, so sending two pieces costs far more per piece than sending fifty. Hallmarking billed to a customer as its own service line carries 5% GST; where it is absorbed into a finished piece you hand over ready-made it rides inside that one supply at 3%, like the making does. Bill it as its own line instead of burying it in making, and the rate follows the line.
