Karigar Metal Issue Book
Every gram you hand to a karigar, logged — issued weight, returned piece, allowed loss — so the ghat conversation is numbers, not argument.
You issue 46 grams to the karigar on Monday and the finished set comes back on Saturday, a little short. He says that is normal ghat, and you have nothing written down to argue with. Multiply that by three karigars and a wedding season, and nobody in the shop can say what metal is still out.
What it will do
- Record every issue by date, karigar, job and purity — gross grams and fine metal both
- Work both sides in fine gold, so solder weight cannot hide a shortfall at settlement
- Hold an allowed-loss figure per process and mark any job that closes above it
- Keep stones and findings on their own line, counted and weighed apart from the metal
- Print the issue slip for the karigar and a sheet of what is still out of the shop
Who reaches for it: Sellers who get pieces made outside the shop — one karigar or ten — and today settle metal on memory, a photo of a slip, or trust alone.

How much weight loss is normal when a karigar makes gold jewellery?
There is no single figure — the loss follows the process, not the man. Machine-made chain gives up least, casting returns most of the tree and sprue to you, and hand-made filigree or cutwork loses most, because metal really does go into the filings and the polishing wheel. Fix the allowed loss per job before the metal leaves the counter, and ask for the burada back — it is your gold.
Should I settle with my karigar on gross weight or on fine gold?
Fine gold. Solder is lower-karat metal, so a heavily soldered piece can come back heavier on the scale while carrying less pure gold than you issued. Work both sides the same way: issued grams × issue tunch, returned grams × the tunch the finished piece tests at. 22K is 916, that is 91.6% pure — the same figure a BIS hallmark stamps as 22K916. Settle the difference in fine grams, then price it.
Do I need a challan to send gold to my karigar under GST?
Yes — metal going out for job work moves on a delivery challan, not an invoice, because nothing is being sold. The challan should carry the description, quantity, purity and value, and inputs are meant to come back inside a year. The karigar bills his labour only, as a service under 9988 at 5%. Keep that challan number against the issue entry and the two sides tie up when anyone checks.
