How is GST calculated on gold jewellery in India?

It follows what you actually supplied, and that is settled before any arithmetic starts. A finished piece handed over ready-made is one composite supply — 3% on the whole value, making included — so a single 3% line on that bill is correct, not short. Where the making was supplied as a service in its own right and billed apart, the metal and stones carry 3% and that making charge carries 5%. This calculator totals the piece the second way and says so beside the total; the printable report works the ready-made figure out in rupees too, so you can see both before deciding which one your bill describes.

What is a fair making charge for gold jewellery?

Machine-made chains often run 8–14% of metal value; handcrafted and bridal pieces run 18–25% or more. The bill-check report shows your effective making percentage so you can compare quotes on equal terms.

How do I check if my jeweller's gold bill is correct?

Enter the karat, weight, rate and making charge from the quote — the tool rebuilds the bill line by line (metal, making, stones, hallmarking and GST) and shows the effective making percentage the total hides. A bill carrying one 3% line is not wrong by itself: on a piece sold ready-made that is the correct treatment, and the printable bill-check report works that figure out beside the split so you can compare the two.

How do I calculate the 22K gold rate from today's 24K rate?

Multiply the 24K rate per gram by 0.916 — 22K is 91.6% pure gold. For 18K multiply by 0.75, and for 14K by 0.585. Rates are always quoted for 24K, which is where counter maths usually goes wrong. Type today's 24K rate, pick the karat, and the per-gram rate for your piece is worked out for you.

Making charges per gram or percentage — which is cheaper?

Neither is automatically cheaper: per gram is a fixed amount, while a percentage rises whenever the gold rate rises, for the same labour. Enter the quote on the basis your jeweller used: % of metal, ₹ per gram, or a flat amount. The tool then shows the effective making as a percentage of metal value, so two differently worded quotes rank on one scale. Saving quotes by name and comparing three side by side comes with Tools Pro.

Is the hallmarking charge separate from making charges?

It is billed as its own line, but for tax it follows the making rather than the metal: where making was supplied as its own service and billed apart, hallmarking sits in that 5% bucket with it. On a piece sold ready-made the question does not arise — the whole value carries the one goods rate. The calculator starts at ₹45 per piece, the usual per-article charge, and you can change it to match your bill or clear it if the jeweller did not charge it separately.

My jeweller quoted making charges and wastage separately — what do I enter?

Add the two into one figure and enter that as the making charge, keeping both on the same basis — two percentages of metal value add up, but a percentage and a ₹-per-gram figure do not. If your bill is written in VA terms, the Wastage (VA%) Calculator on this hub is built for that wording and converts it into plain making charges.

Why doesn't this calculator show today's gold rate automatically?

Because a stale or city-averaged rate would quietly make every figure below it wrong. Gold rates differ by city, by jeweller and through the day, so you type the 24K rate your jeweller or a rates app quotes, and it is kept ready for your next visit. Metal, making, stones, hallmarking and GST are all worked out from that one number.
