My Meesho panel shows 30% courier returns — am I actually losing money?
Quite possibly. An RTO costs you both shipping legs, packaging, the pieces that come back damaged, and two-plus weeks of blocked stock — often ₹150–₹250 on a ₹349 piece. Put your real numbers in: if your RTO rate is above the breakeven dial this tool shows, every extra COD order is costing you money, not making it.
Should I just switch off COD then?
Not blindly — in India switching COD off typically drops orders 30–50%, and that can cost more than the returns did. The Pro simulator runs all three honestly: COD as-is, a ₹50 partial-COD advance, and prepaid-only, and tells you which one leaves the most in your pocket per month at your numbers. Sometimes the answer is keep COD and fix packaging instead.
What does RTO mean for an online jewellery seller?
RTO stands for Return to Origin — the parcel comes back to you undelivered because the customer refused it, could not be reached, or the address was wrong. It is not a customer return, where the piece was accepted first and sent back later. Meesho lists these as Courier Return under Returns, and the return leg is billed to you on top of the forward leg you already paid.
How do I calculate my RTO rate?
Divide the COD orders that came back undelivered by the COD orders you shipped in the same month, then multiply by 100 — 66 back out of 300 shipped is 22%. Use a full month, not a week, because one bad pin code can skew a short window. Meesho reports the figure as Courier Return; type it into the returns step and the audit prices it.
What RTO percentage is too high for a jewellery seller?
There is no single safe number — it depends on your margin, not on an industry average. The line is delivered profit ÷ (delivered profit + what one return costs). A piece earning ₹60 on delivery and losing ₹240 on a return breaks even at 20% RTO, while a wider-margin piece carries much more. The dial here draws that line against your own rate.
Can I claim GST on courier bills as a seller?
Yes, if you are GST-registered — freight carries 18% GST and you claim it back as input tax credit, so only the base courier charge is a real cost. If you are not registered, or not claiming ITC, that 18% is a genuine loss and it loads onto both the forward and the return leg. The hidden-costs step has a toggle for exactly this.
Is this RTO calculator free, and what does Pro add?
The whole audit is free with no daily cap — what one return costs line by line, your monthly profit and monthly bleed, the breakeven dial, and the printable A4 report in three paper designs. Tools Pro adds the COD-versus-prepaid simulator, up to 20 saved pieces compared side by side, five more report designs carrying your shop name and logo, a 12-month view and a spreadsheet of the monthly numbers.
