How do I calculate the price of 925 silver jewellery?
925 sterling is 92.5% silver — the tool multiplies today's 999 rate by weight and purity, adds making charges, and works the GST the way your bill is actually written. A finished piece handed over ready-made is one supply of goods and opens that way here: 3% on the whole value, making included. Where the making was supplied as its own service and billed apart, switch the bill to 3% on the metal and 5% on the making and the breakup re-totals.
What is the difference between 999, 925 and 800 silver?
999 is fine silver (99.9% pure, soft), 925 sterling (92.5%) is the jewellery standard, 800 is a lower-purity alloy common in older and tribal pieces. Pick the purity and the value updates instantly.
Why is my silver bill higher than the rate multiplied by the weight?
Because the metal is only part of the bill. The rate you see quoted is for 999 fine, so a 925 piece holds 92.5% of its gross weight as silver — then making charges sit on top, plus GST. Which GST depends on how the piece was supplied: handed over ready-made it is one supply of goods, 3% on the whole value with making included; where the making was supplied as its own service and billed apart, the bill carries 3% on the metal and 5% on the making. The calculator totals it either way, and shows each of those lines separately so you can see which part moved the total.
How do I get the silver rate per gram from the per-kilo rate?
Divide the per-kilo bullion rate by 1,000 — that gives the 999 fine rate per gram. For a 925 piece, that per-gram figure multiplied by 0.925 is the silver in one gram of the jewellery. This calculator asks only for the 999 per-gram rate and does the purity step itself. It never guesses the day's rate for you.
Is BIS hallmarking compulsory for silver jewellery in India?
No. Hallmarking with HUID is mandatory for gold, but for silver it remains voluntary, so a lot of genuine silver sells carrying only a 925 stamp. BIS-marked silver shows the BIS logo with one of the purity grades — 990, 970, 925, 900, 835 or 800. Grades outside the three tabs, like 835, go in the Custom fineness box.
How much making charge is normal on silver jewellery?
There is no single rate — making follows the work in the piece, not the metal. Counters quote it three ways: a percentage of the silver value, rupees per gram of gross weight, or a flat amount for the piece. Machine-made chains sit low, hand-worked oxidised and temple pieces much higher. Enter any of the three and the breakup shows making as a percentage over the silver value.
Can I price my whole silver stock list at once?
Batch pricing is a Tools Pro feature: paste or upload rows of weight and purity, and every piece is priced at today's rate with the same making and GST settings, as a table you can download as CSV. Pricing one piece at a time is free with no daily limit, and the rate you type is remembered on this browser for tomorrow.
