Stone Count & Setting Charge

Sieve size to stones-per-carat, total carat weight for a design, and setting labour — counted in seconds, not with tweezers.

Melee is bought by weight and set by count. Your parcel says 0.50 carat, your karigar bills per stone, and the listing form wants a number of stones — three different questions out of one lot, and tweezers are how most shops still answer them. Guess it wrong and you pay twice: short stones at the bench, and a setting bill you cannot check.

What it will do

  • Convert a sieve size or a millimetre reading into stones per carat, both ways
  • Total a design's stone weight from counts by size, in carats, cents and grams
  • Price setting labour per stone at your own karigar's rates, by setting type
  • Add a breakage allowance, so you issue the spare stones the bench will ask for
  • Split a piece into metal, stone value and setting labour on separate lines

Who reaches for it: Anyone who buys melee by the parcel and pays a karigar per stone — pave and cluster work, CZ-set silver, kundan lines.

Sellers also ask

How many stones are there in one carat of melee?

That depends on the size, because a carat is a weight and not a count — one carat is 0.2 g and splits into 100 cents. A round brilliant near 1.3 mm runs about 0.01 ct, so roughly 100 of them to the carat; near 2 mm it is about 0.03 ct, so roughly 33. Cut and depth move the figure, so read any chart as a band and count a sample of your own parcel against it.

How is diamond setting charge calculated in India?

Per stone, not per carat, with the rate stepping up as the work gets finer. A single prong or bezel stone is the cheapest per stone; pave and micro-pave the dearest, since every seat is drilled and every bead raised by hand, with channel and flush in between. Rates differ by city and karigar, so ask yours for a rate per stone at each size band and write it down. Most also ask for a few spare stones against breakage.

Do I charge gold on the weight that includes the stones?

No — metal is billed on net weight, which is gross weight less the stones and any non-gold parts. Carats convert at 0.2 g each, so 0.50 ct of melee is 0.1 g off the gross. A hallmark grades metal only: 916 is 22K, 750 is 18K, 925 is sterling silver, and none of them say anything about a stone. Keeping metal, stone value and setting labour as three lines is also what makes the 3% metal, 5% making GST split hold up.
